Does this not imply that speaking to God (prayer) is more important than Him speaking to us (through His Word)?

In response to the previous comment, I would reply:

Only if you think reading a letter is more important than having a conversation….

Prayer should always be a dialogue not a monologue….and in a dialogue with the Almighty, it is not uncommon to do more listening than speaking. Reading a book {even The Book} can never be your only vehicle for hearing from God — if that were the case how could the one’s who penned The Book have had anything to write?

    BTW — Kyle….I’m borrowing the quote. ;-)

You might say that the Bible reading without prayer is particularly unprofitable. And no, I wasn’t meaning to imply that either of those activities was monodirectional. But for a given interval of 15 minutes, if I am forced to choose between a short time of prayer and skimming through a section of the Bible, I suspect that the prayer will be slightly more profitable.

speaking of prayer I came across this quote today. “God is a comedian playing to an audience too afraid to laugh.” – Voltaire By your argument laughing with God is more important than reading the bible.

  5. Lanny French says:

If one is at the point that he can truly laugh with God, he already knows God extremely well through his previous in-depth reading of the Bible. God does love a good laugh and, I suspect, would love the company of someone who can laugh with Him.

Just combine it all. There is a very old style of prayer that combines reading the word and meditating (praying) on what God/Jesus/Spirit is saying to you through the reading/praying of the Word: it is called Lectio. Check Out Sacred Space run by some Irish Jesuits. Gives full how to and readings: it is an amazing process.
